OT: Weird antenna towers along the highway?

Hey that's for me, I am an RF technician.

The triangular array most likelly is for cellular
phone antennas. Very often cellular phone antennas are
rectangular. To be sure that they are cellular, look
for similar looking antennas on all of the three edges
of the top brackets. This rule mostly applies for
cities. But again, depending on the design, where they
need coverage, etc, it could still be cellular.

If the antennas look different, they are for different
services. Mostly paging. Paging offers extended
coverage, so there is paging antennas everywhere.

Some other services, trunking, use big round parabolic
antennas. They are hung lower in the towers. They look
like big bass drums. Mostly used by the phone
compannies to carry voice/data traffic.

They are not supposed to interfere with radar
detectors. Cellular does not put too many watts of ERP
(Effective Radiated Power). Paging is a different
story - more like 500 - 2000 watts ERP).

Cheers.
