I'm probably going to replace the Passat soon after it's fixed, and I'm
thinking along the same lines, with the new A4 and Subie WRX also in the
mix.  By all accounts, the Cooper S is going to be VERY hard to come by
for a year or more, and huge markups are expected.  The DE GTI is a nice-
sounding package, but again availability may be an issue as only 1000
copies are being produced.. there is a 20th anniversary edition expected
for MY 2003 that will be similar plus a few new goodies, and something
like 5000 of them will be built.

The new A4 is an awesome car - even a "stripped" 1.8T is equipped to the
hilt (minus quattro, sunroof) and can be had in the $25k range - a lot
of car for the money.  

I've yet to drive the Subie but it's an intriguing possibility.

Back to your choices, Mini or GTI?  Tough choice!  A drive in both, as
well as seeing some pricing, will probably help a lot...
