Cheapass (tm) parts washer/hot tank?
Try letting the head soak in HOT water, with "Castrol Super Clean" mixed in,
for about 2 hours.
It worked for me and my replacement head with caked on grime.
-Wear gloves, CSC is not nice to skin.
-Also, when done, coat the non-aluminum studs and such with light oil, I
forgot to and got light surface rust after one day. No problem, but a heads
up. (pun intended)
