(was) Re: For those Mk1 owners... (is) No wonder my speedometer is off!!!
If it was just the wrong speedo face then it would do what you say. Wrong speedo entirely (i.e.
100 mph speedo instead of 85 mph speedo) would not change the reading. 85 would read 85 on both. All
speedos are calibrated for a specific input rotation speed being equal to a specific mph reading.
What may be incorrect is the speedo gear (where cable enters tranny, used to correct for different
final drive ratios), or your tire diameter could be different. From what you say it appears to be
15% fast. The rieger has the same problem, but opposite direction (indicated is 10% over actual
speed). I always have to correct for it (for example, top speed of the rieger is 143, not 157 as was
indicated at the time). It worked in my favor though, cause it made 5th a tad narrower, top speed
nearly perfectally matched peak horsepower output (6500 rpm) of my 16v. Thinking back, the rieger
kit has to be more aerodynamic. Theres no way a stock scirocco body would go that fast that easily
(no turbo or anything in the rieger of course).
