Yes, that was most of the issue here, like I said...I don't think
anybody minds at all
if a few pictures are taken to enhance a site, but to grab _every_
picture off a site,
and repost them without _any_ attribution, or under the context with
which they were
posted, with _no_ permission (or even asking) is alright. I won't
change my stance on
that. I certainly don't own the pictures on scirocco.org, but in
almost every case, I've
been sent the pictures from an owner with express permission to post
them, or I've
taken the pictures myself. See the difference? Not only have I
spent a great deal of
time in making them 'appealing' (color, sharpness, resolution,
density, crop, etc..). To
have someone else "profit" (note quotes meaning not literal)
wholesale (meaning every
picture) at my expense has got my hackles up. See where I'm coming
from? I am
certainly all for Scirocco community net-wide, I've got so much
personal time, and money
wrapped up in it there's no doubt. :-) By all means, add to the
scirocco history and
net wide resources, I'm totally for any of that...but I don't support
(inferior IMO) derivative
works off much of my own back and other peoples (car owners)
submissions. Sorry.
As an aside, I've already had owners of some of the cars contact me
with issues of
_other_ people taking the images that they've submitted to me
(scirocco.org) and
having them ripped and used commercially elsewhere. (if you can
follow that. :) ) I've
had to contact those commercial entities on their behalf to ask them
to stop...not quite
the same here, but people are sensitive to this...
As yet a further aside, I work as a software professional in the web
architecture space
in the professional photographic division of a large yellow
photographic giant in
Rochester NY. (if that was vague enough :-) ) I might have some extra
baggage on this
issue. :-)
