why do people think Nitrous burns? - education 101

Uh oh, here comes the ammo:

http://www.wstf.nasa.gov/Oxygen/ConstructionMaterials.htm
70/30 nitrogen/oxygen mix burned in presence of non-flammable materials (not to mention incenerated
them). Must read between lines ("This incident clearly shows that materials that are not flammable
in air are flammable in oxygen-enriched atmospheres."). This means it wasnt the oxygen/nitrogen mix
that was burning, it was merely helping in combustion of a material that is not normally flammable.

http://www.osha-slc.gov/OshStd_data/1915_0012.html
osha regs for civilian workers, quote:
If the space to be entered contains an oxygen deficient atmosphere, the space shall be labeled
"Not Safe for Workers" or, if oxygen-enriched, "Not Safe for Workers - Not Safe for Hot Work."
(since the stuff you are doing hot work on that isnt normally flammable can become flammable in
oxygen enriched environments).

>From the nitrous oxide msds itself: http://www.mathesongas.com/msds/NitrousOxide.htm
SECTION 14 TRANSPORT INFORMATION
PROPER SHIPPING NAME: Nitrous oxide
LABELING REQUIREMENTS: Nonflammable gas; Oxidizer

You see, nitrous oxide itself is not flammable, right from the msds itself! It is however a really
REALLY good oxidizer. Adding this to a flame in progress (i.e. combustion) will make it much more
violent (see the powerpoint lecture page 16 for some principles on how oxidizers come into play).
Page 16 states 'oxygen may not be the oxidizer', they are referring to pure oxygen, not nitrous
oxide.
