Maybe. 

But then if you have shavings,  you could have something in the clutch
comminbg loose. Perhaps a spring on the pressure plate hassnapped and its
doing the machine work. Not like SMS, thats inside the tranny. What it
sounds like you have is different. 

You dont have a timming cover cap on the tranny?
