leaking heater core

The valve in your car is a "ball valve". The previous post was probably
about an auxiliary valve. In that case the cable was probably not adjusted
properly. That's most likely your problem too. Those valves are darned near
bullet proof and should close off the hot water entirely when the cable is
working right.

Dan is right about the side vents. You will never get hot air out of them.
