that darn springy door holder thingy

ok, im sure many listers have the obligatory broken one on one of their vws.
the other day the driver side door of the rieger went 'pop' as i closed it,
and lo and behold, my king-fu-grip door-holder-action is no more.
question: has anyone attempted to fix this thing? im not even sure how to
get at it. i look at it from the inside of the twin and cant really grasp
the 'proper' way to get at it.
