About 10 years ago I had this problem.  Turns out the solenoid's grease is 
old and does not let the plunger slide freely.  Take off the starter, open it 
up and clean out the solenoid plunger.  Use a light grease and put it back 
together.  Should get you another 10 years+. YMMV.
