alternator swap - resolution?



voltage won't drop much at all if you've got a decent size wire. I moved my
battery to the trunk, and ran a 1/0 cable up to the front.  I still get 14.3
volts at my battery, while it reads 14.4 up front.  So that's a tenth of a
volt loss over a 20 foot span. Then again the cable is the size of a
quarter.

So as long as you have the proper size cable in good condition with clean
connections, you shouldn't be loosing very much voltage. Make sure to always
upgrade your grounds.  Always sand down the metal behind your connection,
and use that electrical grease if you want.

so, i did the swap. jumed in the jetta. fired it up. 13.3 volts (same
alternator
that was just putting out 14.1 volts). hrm, this is odd. turn all
accessories on
at once, promptly drops down to 12.3 volts. hrm. then the whole crappy vw
wiring
thing pops into my head. take some voltages at full load: +batt to +alt: .6
volts. -batt to -alt: .8 volts. wouldnt ya know, my wires are crap. i wonder
what voltages are dropped by decent wires. anyone???
