Longitudinal really isn't a problem, at least with the Audi 80 3A:

But, as Tom said, the 90 is a 5 cyl., which would makes things
interesting to say the least.

There are plenty of 3A's out there.  Patrick had a great source ($300
shipped or something ridiculously cheap!).  I know of one locally
(Cincinnati) that is probably for sale, too.  Try to find a junkyard
that doesn't know you want it for a "hot swap" - should be cheaper
that way.
