Dash light short

Turned my headlights on the other day and smoke started coming from the
behind the switch.  After some testing, the headlight switch/lights work 
fine but I have no interior/dash lights.  Seems to be somewhere down the 
wire that comes from the dimmer portion of the switch, probably 
rubbing/grounding somewhere.  I am gonna take a look this weekend and try to 
find the spot, but does anyone know of a common place where the wire gets 
stripped and shorts?  Looking to make this as easy as possible.
