VW related Jetta 2000 Non turbo 4cylinder

I'm in the midst of replacing the rear brake pads as my girlfriend ran them
down to the steel of the pad. The cheap chilton manual she has says to turn
the piston clockwise to get the caliper around the new pads. I've been
turning it for the past half hour without and movement that I can assertain.
Does anyone have any experience with one of these cars? Is there some kind
of trick that I am missing out on.
