diesel trannies?

Been following this conversation a little, but I just got a call from the
shop where I buy all of my parts and have some work done, and they have a 4
speed diesel tranny done there that they don't want and are giving it to me,
is it worth getting?  would the 16v have better take-off anybody know?  I
don't want a tranny just sitting around my place but I don't want to pass it
up either if it is worth anything?
