The master cylinder has (two) oring(s) in it that travel down a tapered
tub to produce the pressure required when stopping the car.
Older cars have accumulated debris and rust on the taper's walls that
gets cleaned away and kept from the useable area by constant and
repeated use of the brakes.
Unfortunately there is the region beyond the everyday that is just
waiting for brake bleeding time, this gunk has an opportunity to tear up
the orings, reducing their pressure building abilities and rendering the
master cylinder's effective life.
Better to try and mimic the normal use of the pedal that pump all the
way to the floor with gusto, better yet o bleed with either a push unit
on the reservoir or a pull unit on each corner in turn.
