tranny and/or shifter problem

hey hey hey yall..
new kid on the block here, and i got a problem... i have an 84 8v scirocco
(145k miles) and the shifter seems to be gettin stuck, particularly in
reverse.  when it is in this condition, i can get it to shift into first,
and sometimes other gears with much work (using both hands).  the wierd
thing is sometimes it seems to work just fine, until you get it rolling.  i
figure i just need to replace the shifter.  does that make sense?  any other
suggestions?
