Transmission(?) noise

Hello all,

This morning, my Jetta started making a
grinding/buzzing/dump-truck-dieseling-down noise.  With the car in gear,
every time you decelerated (or even slightly lifted off the throttle) I'd
hear this noise.  Putting the clutch in doesn't make it go away, but it
does change the pitch of it.  When the transmission is in neutral, there
is no noise.  Any ideas?

BTW, it doesn't sound like any CV joint noise I've ever heard...
