I've been using a tow bar for years to tow VWs around.  I haven't
wrecked a tranny yet.   In fact I am using mine to tow a Scirocco home
from Michigan next friday.  (About 350 miles).   I've gone plenty
further with one too.  Just make sure the car you are towing has oil in
the tranny!
