Vaccuum Retard?

I was poking around my engine and noticed that the vaccuum retard connection
on the dist. doesn't have a hose on it.  The Bentley says that there should
be a line from that connector to the vaccuum manifold.  I don't even see
where that other connector should go.  Is it bad to run with no vaccuum
retard?
