Need help...engine family number?

In order to get my car through customs and across the border they requested 
today the "engine family number". I thought I could find this out through 
the VIN, but I couldn't. So I was wondering if anyone had any idea of what 
exactly this is for a 1988 8v Scirocco? This is one of the final pieces of 
info I need to hand over to customs so I'd really appreciate and help.
