Re: Difference between outer CV joints
This is another one of those "Yes it will work" kinds of deals. Yes it will
work. And you may get "X" amount of miles on it, no problem. Is it right? No.
Take another look at the fit when you put a 90mm outer on an axle originally
designed for a 100mm. The joint is not only larger in diameter, it is
thicker, i.e.- the 100mm CV has a longer spline. When you put the 90mm outer
on an axle originally designed for a 100mm cv-- you'll end up with nearly
1/8" slop laterally on the splines.
This is not good. Net result is, over time, you'll wear your axle splines as
well as your CV.
VW engineered the ball tracks of the CVs to take up the slack as the axle
length changes with suspension travel. They put a spring washer in there to
keep tension against the joint while taking up shock.
If you want to use a 90mm outer-- use a 90mm axle, and go 90mm all the way...
If you want to use a 100mm inner-- use a 100mm axle and go 100mm all the
way...
"Hybrid axles" are ghetto....
