RE: Update...broken chassis on my car..
interesting that you should mention that little tidbit of a question, as a
matter of fact, the break looked really small, seems like the undercoating
stretches and only a break of 3-4 inches actually showed before the
undercoating was removed. it took the chassis shop 4 hrs of labor to
completely strip all of the control arm to make sure they had found all the
breaks on the control arm, they where located under the arm at the unibody
frame, inside the arm near the body, on the upper part of the control arm
(could be seem above once you removed the coolant bottle... scary.. yeah, I
consider myself lucky, the car broke down 20 yards (last turn before hitting
the highway ramp)... 20 more yards... and I would have probably lost the
wheel on an upper deck of highway (bridge structure lapsing over city,
3lanes, cement walls on each side, no escape route...) Yeah... I was lucky.
very lucky....
Brian Wagner can relate... I was to buy his 8v, after initial talk he send
me some picture and found some fissures on his control arm (1986 8v with no
front control arm support bar), after getting it inspected, it was found to
be in far worst shape than expected... Brian, care to comment on those
details for the sake of technical knowledge on the subject of broken control
arm and fissured frames?
I know that I will be from now on, be checking that bit and the complete
framework, on a much more regular basis, probably every 3 months for the
first year, just to ensure that the repairs have held. safety outweighs the
love for a car...
