Tech Fuel Filter Replacement (above pump clipped on tank) 87 16v Scirocco

Hey all the question is has anybody removed this filter and ran the fuel
line directly to the pump, and then return line directly to the tank? Click
on the link below to view the part. VW is calling this a fuel resivoir and
the parts house is calling it a fuel filter. Mine was leaking it is 14 old
plastic and the hose was falling apart that was feeding it. LMK your
thoughts on this one.
