Yes, remove the airbox.  There's a wimpy little connection there and then 
the pathetic little cable runs to the motor mount bracket.  I don't know 
how it ever worked right (even new).  As long as you are removing the 
airbox, you might as well re-do the whole ground cable.  You can buy a 36" 
2 gauge cable from just about any big parts chain.  Run it from the 
negative post on the battery to the point on the transmission where the 
brace for the self-adjusting clutch attaches.  There is a nice big bolt at 
that point.  I then ran a braided 4 gauge cable back to the frame (original 
frame attach point).  The starter must crank at least 50% faster.
