  everyone i've seen has the washer on it. as for the locking nut, they
should both look like regular nuts, except that the hole is ovular
instead of circular, making them self locking. just did a front wheel
bearing tonight.

  that's what i use(d). use it for the ball joints as well. works quite
nicely.
