RE: sequential shift transmission conversion!
The only practical reason I can come up with for downshifting/engine braking
is so that you are always in the correct gear for maximum power during the
deceleration process, in case you suddenly need that power. You're right,
Scott, an engine is not a very efficient braking device, nor was it ever
intended to be. Brakes, on the other hand, are. (and I'd much rather wear
out and replace a set of pads than an engine...)

The problem with engine braking (as opposed to "engine breaking") isn't so
much the chance of hurting the engine. The problem is that modulating the
decelleration force is difficult. For the life of me, I can not understand
why people do this. (Unless the brakes are prone to fading, etc.)
