Well I have never had a problem like that on a standard - I seem to have
every other problem show up :)
But I HAVE had a simmilar problem on two different automatics. Both my
automatic Scirocco and an Automatic Rabbit had the bolts sheer off
between the torque converter and fly wheel. One actually took a chunk
out of the center of the fly wheel when it did it.
Symptoms were a really bad knocking (I'd say banging) and then a stall
and the typical whining of a starter with nothing connected to the
gear.

It would have to be the six bolts that hold the clutch assembly to the
crank. the nine bolts you are thinking of hold the flywheel to the
clutch.
And yes, those six bolts would have to all shear for this to happen.
Unlikely, but certainly not impossible.
