someone needs qualified help : thrust bearing problem

Hello listers,
I got a mail from a U.S. Scirocco driver asking for support.

However, my english knowlewdge seems to be insufficient
to help him here.

Can somebody explain to me what a "thrust bearing"  is? 
he isn't talking of a motor-mount is he ?

Could anybody answer this guy to help him please ?

on another note, have you ever heard of the thrust portion of the main
thrust bearing wearing out. on my scirocco right now my crank shaft has
so much end play that the back of the pressure plate rubs against the
engine block when the clutch pedal is pressed. i pulled the tranny and i
have .060" end play, i took the oil pan down and pulled the center
bearing which is the thrust bearing and the thrust shoulder is totally
worn down but the actual surface of the main bearings that ride against
the journal are in great shape.
have you every heard of this happening to a PL engine or any 1.8 for
that matter. thing of it is if i put another cranck shaft in i dont want
it to happen again. and by the looks of all the other bearings they seem
to be getting plenty of oil. and the engine was just rebuilt about 3
years ago.
any info would help.
