RE: The fate of my car
Well yeah, if you're one of those people that has a hoist :) Sure it's
easy.
Actually, dropping it out the bottom is easy as well. Get good, TALL jack
stands that will raise the front of the car higher than the engine. Use a
transmission jack that has a large plate on it, and viola! Engine out the
bottom. I always take the hood off my car if it's getting major work done,
just to keep from damaging the hood accidentally.
So I guess it just depends on the availability of equipment.
When I worked at a wrecking yard one summer, we'd use the front end loader
(big, center hinged type of tractor) to pick the cars up, drop em on their
side, then blow torch all the hoses, cables, mounts, etc.. Drop the car on
its tires, then pick the car up, sans engine, and drop it on the crusher
pile. But they were mainly "Chebbys" and "Ferds".

I've never dropped an engine (except in ACVW, in which that's the only way
possible), but I can't imagine that it's that much fun to pick the car up
over the engine to get the engine out. If you have access to a hoist, it's
a piece of cake to lift the engine out, tranny attached.
BTW, no need to remove the hood if you're taking it out through the top
either.
I'm doing an engine swap in a few weeks (1.7 EN to 1.8 JH with dual outlet
manifold), and I will definitely pull the old out through the top and drop
the new in. I have an engine hoist, without which this is nearly
impossbile.
