Re: beginning the 2.0 swap - to balance or not to balance....? (long)
The factory specs for all VW engines are very close (I believe within a few
grams) and I have had nothing but problems with places that want to balance
your motor. Not only do they take your money for a very small amount of
work but they will reccomend you to buy new parts when you can use your
current parts. A friend of mine doing a 2.0L 16v in his Rabbit truck took
his parts to a reputable shop here and they told him that he needed new
pistons when the motor had fairly low miles. The reason why was that he had
a scuff on the side of a couple pistons!?!?! Anyway, he got the pistons and
the balance and everything else they reccomended and in a few weeks we'll
see when I blow him away with my 2.0L 16v non-balanced with stock
rods/pistons/etc. if the work was worth it!! I haven't had any problems
with my motor and it has been in my car for 2 years now. Anyway, sorry if
this doesn't make your decision easier but I have a real hard time investing
gobs of money into something that has marginal if any improvement in
performance. Kinda like that centrifigal timing advance cam pulley
thing--$400 for 1/2 to 1 hp! My car still needs paint but have still not
been beat on the street!! (right on Chris!!).
