Jon, as the current owner of an auto rocco...I can give you some insight.

The auto trans isn't a bad unit, but there is a major problem with them.
The seal between the differential and the case tends to get old and start
leaking.  Now, this isn't a problem for the transmission side...getting
diff fluid in there doesn't do much.  BUT, you see, ATF leaks into the
diff and the diff does NOT like this....not the correct lubrication.
Eventually the diff grenades.  Now...if the transmission has been well
cared for, and or this seal has been replaced it could be fine.  But the
best bet is to take it to a mechanic and have the diff fluid checked for
signs of ATF.  Also, the starters are a known problem.  Bosch reccomends a
relay kit which helps, but they do die. (Because of location, they are
directly undernieth the exhaust manifold, and the downpipe goes quite
close.  The starter has a dinky heat shield on it that doesn't seem that
effective.)

So there you have it, they can be great if well cared for.  But I am sure
Marie will chime in here, as she had her trans toast on her and I don't
think it was showing signs of the leaking...
