Re: wheel bearings - upsdate
I rented the tool from Rapid for $30. Worked perfectly! It really isn't
that hard at all.
The one tool that was indespensible was a plumbers wrench. I broke one
90deg socket type tool on the axle nut, then used the plumbers wrench. Then
when using the tool to press out the bearing, you have to hold this giant
nut in place (must be 30+mm) and I didn't have anything that would fit
besides a plumbers wrench
The tool from Rapid is great. They even include the 30mm axle socket and
adapter, and circlip pliers. Only problem I had was getting the inner race
off the wheel hubs. I eventually just gave up and bought 2 new ones. Makes
the job a whole lot easier and only cost 22 each.
Total approximate costs to do both bearings:
Tool rental - 30
2 new bearings - 50
2 new hubs - 50
Total = 130
This is compared to quotes I recieved that ranged from 150-280 PER SIDE from
shops...not including an alignment (which isn't necessary using the tool)
