RE: Bad end of day with my 82
Having had to remove badly rounded former allen head bolts, I've found 2
things that work for me. First is a small pipe wrench, if you can get the
wrench to the bolt. I don't know if you can get it into the crank pulley,
that's not one I've had to fight with. It will turn the bolt even at a severe
angle. I use a pipe wrench with a maximum opening of about 1 1/2" (it's about
5" long) for this kind of problem. It's small enough to get into the most
amazing places. I first used it to get the bolts on the water pump pulley after
my friends at Canadian Tire were kind enough to strip out the inside for me.
The other method I've found involves a Torx bit (3/8 ratchet drive) and
hammer. Find the Torx bit that's closest to the 6mm allen socket and drive it
in with a hammer, attach the ratchet and away you go. The bit metal will be
substantially stronger than the bolt, so you won't hurt the Torx bit and with a
little luck, the outside (bit) points will grab enough to spring it loose. You
can seperate the bit from the bolt later using a vice, hammer and punch. I
think that process is fairly self evident ;)
Good luck.
Cheers,
Colin
