RE: Funk on Da list!! (Long)

OK, I feel I have to respond here as someone who hasn't been on the
list for very long, has almost no experience with car repair, and
will almost certainly always be speaking out of a position of car
ignorance. I am exactly the audience you are seeking to protect from
this incorrect information, and while I appreciate the thought, I do
not appreciate what it means in theory.

True, I mainly just ask questions and benefit from all the experience
on this list, but I don't think that means I should be precluded from
trying to give something back if a question comes up to which I
actually do know the answer. I understand that many of you have a
lifetime of experience with automotive mechanics, and would never try
to say I know more about that subject than you do, but there are
topics like physics, electronic engineering, computer science, and
even industrial design and prototyping that also come into play when
talking about these cars. I think we all need to remember that there
are a lot of different points of view on this list, and it is not
just the people with a lot of mechanical expertise who have something
to offer.

I would hate to see it get to a point where the "correct" answer
always came down to a pissing contest about who had been working as a
mechanic the longest. I think that people always benefit from the
totally free exchange of information. In the short time I have been
on this list, it seems to me that if someone consistently posts
incorrect information, they are eventually set straight by those who
know better, and everything straightens itself out.

The goal is to overcome the deliberate nature of the process.
