Re: 81 Scirocco S - [How To] Trim back to black
Jason,
I have removed all of the trim from my various 81 Scirocco's and
inevitably(sp?) managed to mangle the trim most of the time (especially the
windshield and hatchglass trim).
I figured it was easier to carefully tape off the body and glass and then
sand/paint the trim than to remove/re-install it. Remember on most of the
trim any overspray will be on the rubber gaskets which does not show and is
easy to remove.
Friends of mine, Craig (Cirrus 81S) and David (Cirrus 81S) both removed
their trim and had it powder coated with good results so that is also an
option but I opted for painting it on the car.
If one was stripping the car for a complete re-paint and had the trim off
the car it would be easier to do it off the car but if you just want to
paint the trim it is easier (less time and less chance of damage) to simply
tape off everything and paint it on the car.
What I wanted to pass on is that it is fairly easy (time and money) to
restore your 80/81S back to the factory black trim.
