suspension pros & cons

I'm going to buy a new suspension soon and I don't know what to get. I
looked in the archives and I'm still not certain which is better...coilovers
or struts & springs?

The scirocco in question (1986 8v) will *not* be driven in winter. I'm
looking for a 2" lowering job and best handling.

Which is easier to install? Which offers best performance and handling? Pros
and cons of each system type would be appreciated. Personal experiences are
good too.
