RE: lowering compression ratio for turbo
The trouble with this is twofold.
1) 9:1 compression is impossible to tune with a turbo unless you have
aftermarket $$$$ engine managment. The air/fuel mixture has to be dialed
perfectly or you'll burn a piston day one.
2) NOS is silly gas.
You can however spend the money and go with a new ceramic ball bearing turbo
that is matched to your motor and will boost below 2000 rpms......bad for a
16v that likes to breathe above 6k because the turbo runs out of efficiency,
but great for a 8v.

This is very true. I know many of the new turbo installs
are doing a 9:1 compression to keep the low end torque there
for the street.
BUT, you can go lower compression and still get nice low end
power before the spool-up if you add NOS to your turbo
system.... NOS until it spools up at high speeds and then
let the turbo do its job, nice setup if you care to go
really deep into the "non stock" area. :)

Well, what motor do you have now. I suggest just getting a
JH motor. The
8.5:1 compression is IMHO perfect for a street turbo. You'll
keep the squish
area, and be able to run at least 15psi boost, so long as
you have
sufficient intercooling and enough fuel to make it work. Go
any lower on
compression and you'll loose so much low-RPM/off-boost
torque that it won't
be fun anymore.
Pick up Corky Bell's book "Maximum Boost" and read up on it.
