RE: Electrical problems / rant (long)
I had a simmilar symptom on the golf last time we went on a long drive.
Gauges were going wild, even the headlights would go bright and dim as
we drove faster (it was a nice dark night with no-one on the road so I
tested this). Ended up being the connection between the +ve and the
alternator was going.
The crimped end that bolts to the alternator was getting a littl loose
and the wire would connect and disconnect occationally as we drove. So
sometimes the car ran on battery power sometimes on normal alternator
power.
I am not sure why but the -ve side of the battery looked like a chia pet
and I thought wierd as it was spotless before we left.
Not sure if this will sove your problem, but something easy to check.

Looking under the hood once I was safely home - I notice
the negative battery terminal has a bunch of corrosion on
it already. WTF? I cleaned it less than 24 hours ago!
I'm at this point positive my problem lies in faulty
grounding, but what is causing the corrosion buildup? And
where do I go from here other than adding a bunch of awful
wires all over to various grounding points. (Somewhat
band-aiding the problem in this instance methinks.)
