Re: 220hp? [All this carb crap]
SLOW DOWN THERE CHILDREN, MY POST WAS NOT ABOUT WHAT MAKES MORE POWER, CARBS
OR INJECTION. I was just putting in my .02 in reply to a NA VW 16v able to
make over 180 hp.
Truth be known the Audi touring cars used a very special version of the 2.0
16v a few years back and it made nearly 300. I realize carbs would not
compare. I have only found little internal specs but do know the bore and
stroke were not stock(in response your later text) and I hear some of the
heads have found there way over here and barely resemble the original casting.
First of all there is a HUGE difference in the carbs manufactures put on cars
and the aftermaket ones (unless we are speaking exotics or hi perf euro
stuff) like Weber.
Saying carbs are carbs is like comparing the fuel injection on a beetle with
anything made today.Yes they are of a very old design but then again so are
pushrod V8s but hey they both can be tuned to compete with modern technology
on many levels as far as a performance standpoint. I will not go into "daily
driving" since anyone putting $3000 into a fuel system generally will not
dirve the car its in daily lets not kid ourselves. I am also not concerned
with emissions since my car is a collector I only contribute to pollution on
the weekends, and if I wanted fuel economy I would drive a diesel rabbit or
Honda Hybrid.
Your Mercedes example is amusing at best and bears no reply (see above)
I do remeber an article about putting side drafts on a 924 with the sole
intent on comparing it to stock FI. If I find it I will let you know its in
my old VWP collection.
Now is 220 streetable if it was attained? You cannot answer that unless its
been tried and tested. I hate to use Nascar and V8s as an example but they
are doing what was considered impossible not too long ago. Who would have
thought you could run a pushrod carburated V8 at 8500 RPM for 500 miles. Not
that VW engines will ever reach that level of R&D but more meant as a
reminder to keep an open mind and belive what you see and not think or hear.
I once remember reading that its "physically" impossible for a hummingbird to
fly according to "laws". (or something like that)
I would not use the 1.8t as a character witness in any good way. That motor
is obviously detuned and ill equipped since 80s turbo motors could match it
in specific power output all day long in stock form. Here is one amusing veiw
on the VW/Audi 5V head http://members.aol.com/pumaracing/pp02.htm scroll
to the bottom.
My whole thing with carbs is exactly what Neal guessed. The sound and visual
impact to me is sooo seductive I dont care if it cant "hang" with FI in your
terms. Some things appeal to people on a level thats undescribable and many
times impractical or what others scoff at. How else could you explain the
success of David Hasselhoff across the world or of televangelists.
The reason I drive an old VW and not a new one is for the elbows deep
experience it gives me and the ups and downs that come with it. There are
many days when I want to scrap it but boy when I put a Mustang in my rear
view with my right foot planted.and the wheel tugging at my arm as I shift
gears and try to keep an eye on the tach for the perfect shift point its all
worth it when later he comes up and says "what the hell is in that thing".
Not to mention the E36 M3 that gave me the thumbs up after I was glued to his
bumper till well over 120. And now with my carbs on I will get the same
undeniable sound I have been missing for 10 years since I had them on my TT
built 2.0 8v in my rabbit. Of which is being resurected in full period
correct form complete with Drake cam and sprocket, Solexes, H&H bars the
whole lot. I guess I am a nostalgic sap for liking carbs but then again I
will be 30 in January.
No flame intended just different strokes for different folks. Although I
better get my Halon ready.
