  The main reason for the cover is to keep rocks from getting caught between
the belt and the pulley(s).  This would break the belt, if the stone was
large enough...

You must be really chomping at the bit.  Not putting the cover on will only 
allow you to install the crank pulley.  Some guys run without the timing 
belt covers, but the Deutsche engineers put them there for a 
reason.  Keeping the belt dry may be one of the biggest ones.
