[drivetrain-nope-CLUTCH] answers...
ok, I'm down to 5 bolts and that damned speedo connection on the tranny...
upon removal of the starter, I was vindicated in my analysis of a clutch
problem. I found a nice little piece of chewed metal right there in the hole
where the starter sits. I've decided to take this opportunity to upgrade:
a-frame bushings
3 of the 4 motor mounts
better clutch
throw-out bearing
pressure plate
and anything else I feel like upgrading/repairing whilst I'm 'down there'.
If anyone can think of anything they wish they'd have done last time they
had their shit out, drop me a line so I might benefit from your hindsight.
as always....thanx!

we'll all know tomorrow, 'cause I'll post the results (and maybe a sound
.wav ) of the exploratory dissection. Gosh I hope it's just the clutch......

Better safe than sorry, so it's good to check.
I know from personal experience that even a broken pressure plate rivet
floating around in the bell housing sounds like part of your car broke
off and you're dragging it on the pavement. So, maybe the springs are
just loose in the disc, it's still an indicator they're getting ready to
go.
