Eric, I used your write-up as a guide when i did my a/c removal, and it worked great.  Cutting the bracket wasn't as hard as a expected with the hacksaw, and few finishing touches with the dremel did the trick.  I even threw a coat of paint on the rusty old thing to make it look like new...well almost new.
