RE: Buying Parts - 0pinions wanted

How about setting up a yahhoo mailing list " A1 Parts for sale " ?? and
just keep it all off this scirocco based list and get all A1 involved in the
parts "find a deal place"? Personally I don;t deal with most "commercial
places" because they are usually (and because of overhead and cost of rent,
electricity cost etc. normally are a % above what you can find it
elsewhere.)

Patrick.

Listers;
So I agree that J.P. sounded pretty commercial, and that that could get
way out of hand if we let commercial types post to the list. Trouble is
that it is only really SPAM if it is unwanted (which raises the question of
whether SPAM itself becomes "meat" if you are hungry enough). Also,
trashing Potterman was WAY out of line, but probably just done in anger and
frustration. The question I have here is a bit larger than this incident, I
think.

The funny thing is that I, like many on the list, am a cheapass. Now I'm
not contesting Ron's position -- don't get excited. I honestly want to know
if someone out there can get me a better deal on a part.

Also, I think it is worth recording somewhere that Badger 5 throttle bodies
can be had at a substantial group discount, as can many other items. I
have heard rumors of group discounts of bars and braces, but I have no
information on these, and would be starting from scratch if I tried to put a
group deal together. There is no reason for that to be the case. No, I
don't think searching the archives is the solution, because you basically
have to know the deal exists to even start that search. Read onward,
please.

So is there some way that commercial and non-commercial people alike can be
allowed to get and share information to us on the rare occaision that they
actually DO have some kind of deal to offer? Maybe all it takes is a place
on the website that we can submit links or short descriptions of places
people have found their most excellent deals. Imagine some kind of list
like this, with a nice index to keep it all sorted:

Badger 5 throttle bodies
Deal: Group discount of ~$xxx was obtained by placing 5 orders at once
directly to the company in Nov,2001.
Description: These are... ... more info at this site.

16v Lighted Keys:
Deal: a lot of 22 of them were purchased in January of 2001 from a
dealership in Germany, and were shipped to the US. Price for each one came
out to ~$22.
Description: This is the lighted key with fob that came with all 16v's.
There is a picture at http://.......
These are key blanks you will have to have cut to your key.

Various replacement Parts:
Deal: JohnDoe's import service in Nowhere Indiana has been known to
give 10-15% discounts on things he has in stock. He won't ship. VW only
shop.
Contact: John Doe, Parts manager, JohnDoe's Import Service,
555-555-5555. 2001 Space Odysee lane, Nowhere ID, 90210

Then a separate section where claims that haven't been verified can be kept,
like this:

Various replacement Parts:
Deal: cheap deals on most remanufactured or new replacement parts you
would find at a parts store, including brakes, clutches, MC's, steering,
plugs, wires, etc.etc.
    Description:
    Contact: J P
    Deal submitted by: J P
(note, this is as yet an unverified claim. If any user
finds this deal useful and true, please report it. Likewise, if the deal is
untrue, report it immediately)

(bet I got Josh's attention with that)
Anyway, this could be a helpful, informative supplement to overgrown links
lists that only give you names, and it could also keep track of group deals
or whatever. It could also give people like J P a place to do whichever
thing it is he is doing - be it spam or trying to hook some people up with
the deals he is lucky enough to be hooked up with.

In this way we could remember what group discounts we know we can get. It's
like keeping a list of sponsors for a racing team, and would allow us to
keep the relationships, like we are building with Badger, alive and
prosperous for all of us.

This sort of list could be moderated and controlled, so that things like
super white Xenon-look bulbs can be kept off the index, and potentially
useful VW parts can be found by all of us.

Let me (Brian) know if you are interested in this and have any suggestions
for format, etc. I am willing to set up the page to the best of my
abilities and moderate it. I would need to get with Brett to see about
having it incorporated into Scirocco.org if that is what we want, but it may
be as simple as me e-mailing him the file whenever I update it, and he can
just replace the existing index with the updated one (Brett has enough to
do, and I don't think this index, if done, should be thrown on his back,
too).

Sincerely;
Brian Haygood
