You must be really chomping at the bit.  Not putting the cover on will only 
allow you to install the crank pulley.  Some guys run without the timing 
belt covers, but the Deutsche engineers put them there for a 
reason.  Keeping the belt dry may be one of the biggest ones.

Not to mention oil slopped when topping it up, not the best for valued rubber
parts.
