You don't have to modify anything electrical...
I installed a 1.8L JH GTI engine in my '81 Scirocco which came with a
1.7L EN engine, it is the easiest engine swap. and it worked out great.
It will work fine with your electricals, I'd use the GTI distributor
though.
If it is a high compression engine, I'd consider a Knock sensor ignition
w/distributor.
The A2 8V GTI/GLi's are an excellent source for the knock ignition.
