Resolved: How to ruin a cylinder head? Or, Yes I'm a dumb-a**!!

Many thanks to the folks that made suggestions.  It turned
out that it was the thin metal end-plate between the engine
& intermediate shaft pulley - the plate had moved / bent
just enough that it was rubbing.

Just took the car for a test drive, and other than the
p-side front wheel bearing needing replaced and an exhaust
leak taken care of, she's ready for anything.
