hmmm. <$1K? i've got time and the money this summer.  i've got a 2.0 16v
longblock ($550). so for under $1000 i guess p&p the 2L head is out of the
question. so we throw on the 1.8. say i sell the 2L head for $200. that
leaves me $650. now where do i get those 25-30hp from for $650? all i've got
now is an exhaust. cam, fuel enrichment ain't gonna do it, but will still be
pricey. what else did you have in mind? i'm not particularly interested in
swapping in the motronic, though i guess if you chipped it...
