theres a nylon jacket in the cable, if its old as the hills the steel
probably ate through the nylon, so you're metal on metal. best bet i would
figure is get a new cable. lubrication might get you by for a while, but
steel braids do funky stuff when they start rubbing against the surround
coil, so damage may be done already.
