Octane doesn't add more power, in fact, there's _less_ energy in the
gasoline as octane goes up.  Anyway, increased octane can help prevent
preignition and knock. 

Well stated. There is a decent article on octane at www.techweasel.com, click
on articles. Sorry, I don't know how to make the address hypertext, maybe
somebody could enlighten me if it is easy.
